Following our extraordinary wins at the South Africa event, CDH was again recognised at the 2025 ANSARADA DealMakers Africa (East Africa) Awards, held in Nairobi on 17 March 2026. The awards celebrate excellence across East Africa’s M&A, corporate finance, and private capital markets, recognising the top organisations shaping and leading the industry.

We congratulate our expert team on Vodacom’s acquisition of an additional 20% stake in Safaricom, named DealMakers Africa (East Africa) Brunswick Deal of the Year 2025. This milestone transaction increases Vodacom’s total ownership in the NSE-listed company to 55%, giving it majority control, and will accelerate growth while expanding digital and financial inclusion across Kenya and Ethiopia.

At the IFLR Africa Awards 2026, held in Cape Town on 17 March 2026, we were named Team of the Year – Private Equity (Regional). IFLR’s awards stand out for recognising legal innovation in dealmaking, whether through pioneering new legal frameworks, designing novel structures, or setting benchmarks for others to follow. They celebrate the work that strengthens the cross-border investment environment. This award highlights the strength and trajectory of our practice, coming shortly after our move from Spotlight to Band 2 in Chambers, showing that we are building a truly competitive and leading presence in private equity across Africa.

Looking ahead, Nedbank Group’s disposal of a 21.22% stake in Ecobank Transnational has been shortlisted for the DealMakers Brunswick Deal of the Year 2025 (West Africa), with results to be released this Friday. This multi-jurisdictional transaction, involving complex regulatory approvals, underscores our ability to deliver where it matters most.

SARS v PAJA: The saga continues

Beginning most prominently with the original hearing of ABSA Bank Limited v Commissioner, SARS (3) SA 513 (GP) in the High Court (which we previously discussed here ), a taxpayer’s right to approach the High Court to request the administrative review of SARS’ decisions has been a bone of contention between SARS and taxpayers. Although the ABSA case was put to bed by the Constitutional Court earlier this year (it was consolidated with four other cases in United Manganese of Kalahari Proprietary Limited v Commissioner, SARS and Four Other Cases (5) BCLR 530 (CC)), the most recent case to reach the High Court in this saga between SARS and taxpayers came in the form of Kerbyn Cape 2 Proprietary Limited v Commissioner, SARS (15899/2023) ZAWCHC 308.

Access Chapter 2 admitted as amicus curiae in landmark sex work decriminalisation case

In May 2024 in the Western Cape Division of the High Court, S.H. and The Sex Workers Education and Advocacy Taskforce (SWEAT) launched a landmark legal challenge to decriminalise sex work in South Africa. In the application referred to as S.H. and Another v The Minister of Justice and Correctional Services and Others , SWEAT is the second applicant and positions itself in support of the first applicant, S.H., who is a sex worker based in Cape Town. The founding affidavit is deposed to by S.H., and in it she chronicles the harassment, lack of protection, stigmatisation and discrimination that she endures as a sex worker. In this groundbreaking and historic application, both S.H. and SWEAT seek to have the legislation that criminalises sex work in South Africa declared unconstitutional and to, as a consequence, have sex work decriminalised.
