The scheme is a circa 13.5MW hydro-electric generation facility to be located in Swaziland and is valued at 700 million Emalangeni.

On 18 November 2024 the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) released and handed over to the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities (DWYPD) a groundbreaking national study on gender-based violence (GBV), which revealed the extent of the crisis that continues to devastate individuals and communities across our country. It showed, among other things, that 33,1% of women in South Africa aged 18 years and older had experienced physical violence in their lifetime – which translates to an estimated 7,310,389 women – and that 9,9% of women had experienced sexual violence in their lifetime, which translates to 2,150,342 women across thecountry.

Religious practice and inherent requirements of the job

The tension between religious beliefs and workplace demands was addressed in the decision of the Labour Appeal Court (LAC) in Sun International Management Limited v Sayiti (JA13/23) ZALCJHB 411 (21 October 2024). The issue to be decided was whether the employee’s dismissal was automatically unfair, given that the reason for his dismissal was his inability to perform an inherent requirement of the job, working between sunset on Friday and sunset on Saturday, because of his religious beliefs.
