She cautioned that a major risk lies in AI's unpredictability, particularly the lack of explainability in AI-generated output and how AI models are trained to provide answers rather than express uncertainty. Through real-world examples, including Anthropic's reports, the indexing of ChatGPT and Grok chats on Google, and Deloitte's widely publicised hallucinations issue, she highlighted the risks employers face when deploying AI without careful consideration or failing to regulate its use in the workplace.
For South African audiences, Safee emphasised that data privacy breaches are a serious concern. The Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) prohibits sharing third-party data without consent, and any unauthorised disclosure, including employees sharing data with AI in certain contexts, could breach POPIA.
