Sashin explains that South African law does not currently prevent employers from requesting previous payslips during the hiring process. This often ties into issues like equal pay for work of equal value, which comes with certain limitations.
Sashin says there is a global shift towards pay transparency and fairness, with many countries banning salary history questions to help break the cycle of wage inequality. “You don’t want a poor salary early in your career to follow you,” he notes.
Sashin adds that the proposed Fair Pay Bill in South Africa aims to address these issues. However, it could make it harder for employers to gauge suitable offers, as they will need to rely more on market data and disclose salary expectations upfront.
