City of Cape Town: Establishment of a regional landfill site
Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr advised the City of Cape Town on a challenge to the authorisation of the establishment of a regional landfill site.
This mandate is important as the City of Cape Town is running out of space in which to dispose of waste and it is critical that a new landfill site be established to ensure that adequate municipal services are supplied.

It has become quite routine for employers to simply dismiss a possible claim of constructive dismissal. This is because it is one of the more peculiar forms of dismissal claims and, statistically, a form of claim that does not easily find success at arbitration. In short, for an employee to succeed they must show that the resignation was because their continued employment had become intolerable at the instance of the employer. While the bar is high, the risk of a successful constructive dismissal claim can be serious for an employer. Also, an employee is not limited to compensation and may seek reinstatement (despite the resignation). The National Register for Sex Offenders: Nowhere left to hide
On 18 November 2024 the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) released and handed over to the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities (DWYPD) a groundbreaking national study on gender-based violence (GBV), which revealed the extent of the crisis that continues to devastate individuals and communities across our country. It showed, among other things, that 33,1% of women in South Africa aged 18 years and older had experienced physical violence in their lifetime – which translates to an estimated 7,310,389 women – and that 9,9% of women had experienced sexual violence in their lifetime, which translates to 2,150,342 women across thecountry.
