Susan Meyer

Director

Susan Meyer is a Director in our Competition Law practice. Susan has specialised experience in advising clients on all issues of competition law including: prohibited practice litigation, general compliance (training workshops, dawn raid advice, and business strategy), corporate leniency, exemption applications and merger notifications. 

On behalf of local and multinational clients, Susan has notified several mergers, litigated, and provided competition law advice in respect of numerous African jurisdictions, including the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).

Susan also has significant experience in health sector regulatory work.

Susan's competition experience spans a diverse range of sectors, including: healthcare and pharmaceuticals, agriculture, oil and gas, renewable energy, retail, FMCG, financial services (asset management, banking and insurance), commercial real estate, mining, infrastructure, education, information technology, as well as hospitality and leisure.

Susan began her career as a Candidate Attorney with Hofmeyr Herbstein and Gihwala (now Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr) in 2006. She was appointed as an associate in 2008 and promoted to Senior Associate in January 2011.  Susan became a Director in 2014.

  • Represented Mediclinic in obtaining various horizontal merger approvals in the private hospital market, most recently the transaction involving Mediclinic International Plc, Remgro and MSC.

  • Obtained merger approval for PSG Group's unbundling.

  • Successful merger approvals for Hollywoodbets acquisitions of Kenilworth Racing and Gold Circle.

  • Representing Pam Golding in the Competition Commission's Online Intermediation Platform Market Inquiry

  • Attained numerous merger approvals for various Old Mutual group firms in South Africa and elsewhere on the continent, for example: acquisitions in the infrastructure and renewable energy businesses of AE-AMD Renewable Energy, IDEAS Fund and African Infrastructure Managers; Old Mutual Private Equity's disposal of Chill Beverages and its acquisition of the Morecorp Group, Footgear and Long4Life; and various Futuregrowth investments.

  • Successful merger approval for 27four's Agrarius' landmark Shari'ah deal in the agricultural sector involving the acquisition of Capespan, as well as recent merger approvals for Capespan's disposals of its pome division.

  • Obtained merger approval for RMB Ventures and Bopa Moruo Fund's acquisition of Icon Oncology, a leading provider of cancer treatment.

  • Represented Beko Europe B.V. in obtaining SA merger approval for the global transaction in terms of which it acquired control of Whirlpool Corporation's European, Middle East and North Africa major domestic appliances business and Whirlpool Maroc S.A.R.L (Morocco) and Whirlpool MEEA (UAE).

  • Represented Vox Ventures B.V. (part of the global PPF Group N.V.) in obtaining South African merger approval for its acquisition of Robertson & Caine.

  • Acted as legal advisor on behalf of the Twisp Group in the approved merger with British American Tobacco.

  • Successful merger approval for Spear REIT's acquisition of Emira's Western Cape portfolio.

  • Obtained merger approval for the management buyout of JSE-listed OneLogix Group.

  • Represented numerous listed and unlisted clients in the commercial real estate sector in successfully obtaining merger approvals, including Fortress Real Estate Investments Limited, Spear REIT Limited, Old Mutual, Resilient REIT Limited, Castleview Property Fund, Atterbury Property Fund, Amdec Investments, Government Employees Pension Fund, Dipula Income Fund, Equites Property Fund, City of Cape Town.

  • Represented Zaad Holdings Limited and its parent company JSE-listed Zeder Investments Limited in various horizontal and vertical mergers in South Africa and elsewhere on the continent, involving acquisitions of agri businesses, such as EASEED Group, GAP Chemicals, Hygrotech Properties, Agri Voedsel, and Klein Karoo Saad.

  • Acted as legal advisor on behalf of the Twisp Group in the approved merger with British American Tobacco.

  • Acted for private hospital group, Mediclinic, in the Competition Commission's market inquiry into private healthcare.

  • Representing JSE-listed Quantum Foods in the Competition Commission's ongoing Poultry Market Inquiry.

  • Represented JSE-listed firms, Old Mutual Group and Resilient Property Fund, in the Competition Commission's market inquiry into the LPG sector.

  • Attained unconditional merger approvals for Curro, PSG Private Equity, Stadio Investment Holdings, Kaap Agri Limited, Precrete Holdings.

  • Represented Mettle Investments Limited in securing unconditional merger approval from the Kenyan and Namibian Competition Authorities pertaining to a solar power business.

  • Representing Fortress Real Estate Investments Limited in the Competition Commission's market inquiry into the retail sector.

  • Represented CA Sales, a sales and merchandising company in the fast-moving consumer goods sector, in obtaining various horizontal merger approvals in South Africa, Swaziland, Botswana and Namibia.

  • Representing various clients in ongoing prohibited practice complaint proceedings in South Africa and other African jurisdictions.

  • Representing clients in the settlement of implemented, non-notified mergers.
