Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr claims top spot by deal value for SA firms in Mergermarket’s M&A league tables for Africa and the Middle East

Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr (CDH) Mergers and Acquisition (M&A) team led by Willem Jacobs, National Practice Head, Corporate and Commercial, achieved first place by deal value for South African firms and 12th place internationally in the latest Mergermarket M&A Africa & Middle East 2015 Global League Tables. Its deal value increased to $18.8 billion from $9.2 billion in 2014.

CDH came second for Africa & the Middle East by deal count after registering 36 deals. In buyouts by deal value in Europe, CDH was the first South African firm and 15th internationally.

The price isn’t always right: Liquidators hold their ground in dispute over shareholding valuation

On 24 March 2023, the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) handed down judgment dismissing an appeal brought by Strategic Partners Group (Pty) Ltd (SPG) against a judgment of the High Court in the matter of SPG and Others v Liquidators of Ilima Group (Pty) Ltd (in liquidation) and Others (Case no 1291/2021) ZASCA 27 (24 March 2023). This, after a myriad of litigation in the court a quo where SPG brought an application for declaratory relief against the liquidators of Ilima Group (the main application) with the liquidators responding with a counter-application.
