Navigating the legal landscape of agritech contracting
Tayyibah and Shanley explained that agricultural technology, commonly referred to as agritech, encompasses the use of advanced technologies to improve agricultural productivity and efficiency. Innovations such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), precision sensors, drones, and data platforms are transforming agriculture into a data-driven industry and reshaping the way agricultural businesses operate globally.
They noted that South Africa is actively participating in this transformation, with the country’s agritech market valued at approximately US$1.1 billion in 2025 and projected to experience significant growth by 2030. While the sector presents substantial commercial opportunities, they highlighted that the rapid adoption of agritech also gives rise to new legal, regulatory, and contractual considerations that businesses must carefully navigate.
