Brigitta emphasises that gender-based violence is a pervasive issue that cannot be solved by the law alone; it requires collective action to address the deep-rooted social, political, and economic factors that drive it.

Brigitta explains that the scourge of GBV has plagued South African society for centuries, with its origins tracing back to the system of slavery in the 1600s, when widespread sexual violence and exploitation of enslaved women were already documented.

Brigitta notes that South Africa therefore has no shortage of policies and legislation aimed at protecting women and girls. At the heart of this framework is the Constitution, which safeguards women’s basic human rights to freedom and security of the person, equality, dignity, and a range of socioeconomic rights.

Brigitta adds that GBV is fuelled when we allow outdated gender norms and power dynamics to go unchallenged. It thrives when harassment and discriminatory treatment of women in the workplace are ignored, and when businesses choose silence over empowerment.
