Retha explained that both Harvey and Legora function as advanced digital assistants, built specifically for the legal industry. “They use large language models, similar to ChatGPT, but are tailored to assist with legal work,” she said.

Retha emphasised that these tools are not designed to replace lawyers, but rather to help them work faster and smarter by automating repetitive or complex tasks. However, Retha also highlighted the risks associated with AI, such as hallucination, bias, and potential breaches of confidentiality. “We’re extremely mindful of client confidentiality and have taken a very careful, structured, and comprehensive approach to ensure the secure and responsible use of AI.”

“Ultimately, these systems can’t function independently,” Retha adds. “There must always be human oversight, human review, and assessment. AI helps remove the routine from the lawyer’s workload, allowing us to focus on strategy, insight, and judgment, always grounded in ethics.”
