Our team advised Sinopec Group in its bid for Chevron Global Energy Inc's refining and retail assets in South Africa and Botswana.
Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr represented Sinopec Group, China’s largest manufacturer and supplier of petroleum and petrochemical products and an entity which was ranked third in the Fortune Global 500 in 2017.
Our competition team advised this client in its bid for Chevron Global Energy Inc's refining and retail assets in South Africa and Botswana. The merger attracted considerable attention given the strategic importance of the refining assets. As a result, the Sinopec was required to negotiate a comprehensive set of undertakings with the Minister of Economic Development aimed at ensuring that the merger served the public interest.

On 17 June 2022, the Western Cape High Court handed down a judgment in Community Schemes Ombud Service v Stonehurst Mountain Estate Owners Association (12399/2021) ZAWCHC 126 (17 June 2022) in terms of which it declared that the Community Schemes Ombud Service (CSOS), its staff members and its adjudicators are all immune from costs orders in respect of legal proceedings instituted against the CSOS in the High Court.
