Ruan began his career in 2009 as a Trainee Accountant at Moore Stephens (now Moore South Africa) in Stellenbosch and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2012. He joined Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr as a Financial Manager in 2012. In April 2018 he was appointed as a Director.
