CDH Youth Day community workshop

In partnership with ProBono.Org, a team of associates from our Finance & Banking and Corporate & Commercial Practice areas comprising of Mashudu Thidiela, Andile Sangweni, Kgotso Matjila, Mulalo Tshikovhele, Sibusisiwe Khumalo and BK Taona, alongside Jacquie Cassette and Tricia Erasmus from our Pro Bono Practice (the Team), organised and hosted a Finance, Banking and Corporate Governance workshop on 28 June 2018 in Tembisa. The workshop formed part of our firm’s “Empower and Inspire” Youth Day Initiative. 

The workshop was held at the Ekurhuleni Council Chambers in Tembisa, east of Johannesburg, and a crowd of approximately 40 youth from the community attended. The workshop was geared at equipping up-and-coming social entrepreneurs and social activists with practical finance, banking and corporate governance knowledge. 

To this end, the speakers guided the attendees through the rudimentary aspects of funding and corporate governance as well as the costs, timelines and documentary requirements involved in the incorporation of different entities and obtaining funding. Whilst corporate governance may seem out of place in a Finance & Banking workshop, the reality is that sound corporate governance and orderly company records are central to any business’ ability to raise finance.

The workshop was a tremendous success as was displayed by the enthusiasm of the attendees and the highly interactive nature of the presentations. Furthermore, the feedback received from both the attendees, as well as a number of other interested parties, has been overwhelmingly positive.

CDH continues to present opportunities for young commercial lawyers to do work for the greater good and to promote community development. The workshop affirmed and celebrated the core values of our firm and it was also an inspiring reminder that being a corporate lawyer does not preclude one from serving those around you. With just a little bit of creativity, commitment and collaboration, commercial lawyers can do a lot to promote access to information and the legal system we are called to uphold.
