Charles explained that compounded GLP-1s have seen a significant rise in popularity worldwide, resulting in supply and demand challenges. He noted that one of the primary concerns with compounded GLP-1s is that they are not assessed or tested by the relevant regulators, such as the FDA in the United States or SAHPRA in South Africa.

Charles also highlighted concerns about the emergence of unregulated compounded drugs in the market, particularly products containing active pharmaceutical ingredients that are not registered with SAHPRA. He noted that this raises serious safety concerns, as regulators are unable to verify the quality, safety, or potential effects of these products on patients.

In addition, Charles referred to recent communications issued by SAHPRA indicating that compounded GLP-1 medicines may soon be considered undesirable due to safety concerns, meaning they can no longer be sold in South Africa.
