As a way to combat the decades-old issue of fraudulent identity documents being in circulation in South Africa, Tommy Livhuwhani Makhode, the Director-General of the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) published the following notice in the Government Gazette: “Notice in terms of Section 3 of the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act: Intention to cancel identity documents or cards of persons whose identity numbers are blocked and call representations from affected persons (GG) 5135 (16/08/2024)” on 16 August 2024 .

To pay or not to pay? An employer’s liability to pay severance pay where alternative employment is secured
In the recent judgment of Khanya Cleaning Group (Pty) Ltd v South African Transport & Allied Workers Union and Others (PR32/2023) ZALCPE 39 (2 October 2024) the Labour Court clarified the extent of an employer’s duty to make payment of severance pay to an employee dismissed for operational requirements (a retrenchment) in circumstances where the employer played an active role in securing alternative employment for the retrenched employee with a newemployer.

New legislative developments under the Movable Property Security Rights (Amendment) Bill, 2024
The Movable Property Security Rights (Amendment) Bill, 2024 (Bill) proposes to make amendments to various statutes to harmonise laws relating to security over movable property, including the Movable Property Security Rights Act, Cap 499A Laws of Kenya (MPSRA) and the Companies Act, Cap 486 Laws of Kenya (Companies Act).The Bill also proposes to repeal the Hire Purchase Act, Cap 507 Laws of Kenya (HPA).
