Are there different classes of work permits in Namibia?

Yes. Namibia has two main classes of authorisation that allow foreign nationals to perform work:

The two primary work authorisations

  • Short-term work visa (up to six months): This is used for timelimited assignments such as installation, commissioning, training, audits, urgent repairs or short projects. It authorises work for the specific assignment, usually at stated locations, and is timebound. Often processed via a Namibian mission abroad (or designated ports of entry in some cases).
  • Employment permit (longer term, typically one to two years, renewable): For ongoing employment in Namibia with a local employer (or locally registered entity). It ties the holder to the specific employer, role, and location approved in the permit and is adjudicated in Namibia by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security.
