Peter Mutema is an Associate in our Corporate & Commercial, and Employment Law practice areas. Peter began his career as a legal trainee at the Central Bank of Kenya’s legal department. He later joined the firm of Iseme Kamau and Maema (IKM) Advocates and in 2019 joined Kieti LLP where he provides support to the Banking and Finance, Corporate and Commercial,and Employment Law practices.

Peter began his career as a legal trainee at the Central Bank of Kenya’s legal department where he was involved in developing and reviewing FinTech regulations including reviewing the National Payment Service Regulations and developing the standard trust deed and a standard management agreement used by mobile money providers in Kenya.

He later joined the firm of Iseme Kamau and Maema (IKM) Advocates where he gained a broad range of experience ranging from M&A, projects and infrastructure, general commercial contracts and employment law.

In 2019 Peter joined Kieti LLP where he assists in advising clients in corporate, finance and general commercial transactions. Peter also has experience and has assisted in various employment law matters within various industries including finance, manufacturing and construction and consistently assists in advising on both contentious and non-contentious employment issues.

Since joining Kieti LLP, Peter has been involved in advising on a number of notable transactions, some of the most memorable of which include:

  • Assisted in advising Mauritius Commercial Bank in connection with its USD 80 Million and subsequent USD 70 million trade finance facilities to a local petroleum company.
  • Assisted in advising on Lebashe’s acquisition of Tiso Blackstar’s shares in Radio Africa.
  • Advising the firm's clients on employment related matters ranging from disciplinary hearings, redundancy, restraint of trade agreements and general labour disputes.
  • Assisted in advising the fund manager in the Kenya Off-Grid Solar Access Project (KOSAP) with respect to facilities advanced by the Ministry of Energy to a provider of off-grid home power solutions.
  • Assisted in advising SunFunder Inc. in its debt financing agreements to a Kenya based company providing turnkey construction, PV solar and office fitout solutions.
  • Assisted in advising REIKE Limited in drafting and negotiating its engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts for two hydropower project in Kenya.
  • Assisted in advising Camco Energy, a leader in sustainable energy projects and low-carbon finance, in connection with financing to company involved in clean energy projects in Kenya.
  • Assisted in advising SunFunder Inc. the security agent and lead arranger in a syndicated debt financing facility to an off-grid solar solutions provider.
  • Advising Mota – Engil Engenharia E Construção Africa S.A., in drafting and reviewing its project contracts and project leases.
  • Assisted in advising the developer of Ten Villa’s Estate, a medium-cost housing estate in the Kajiado, in all conveyancing related matters including drafting, negotiating and registering leases, sale agreements and the eventual transfer property.
  • Assisted in advising Hoggers Limited in the proposed disposal of certain of its assets.
  • Acting for the Mauritius Commercial Bank in respect to its multi-million dollar financing to a local sugar manufacturer in Kenya.
  • Assisted in advising Akili Partners Limited, AgDevCo Kenya Limited, SunFunder East Africa Limited, Mota – Engil Engenharia E Construção Africa S.A. on employment matters including developing employee employment contracts and developing organisation human resource policies.
