Senior Associate

Naasha Loopoo is a Senior Associate in our Competition Practice. She advises on all aspects of competition law, including prohibited practices, multi-jurisdictional merger notifications and general competition advice. Prior to joining the firm, Naasha spent 3 years at the Enforcement and Exemptions Division of the Competition Commission of South Africa where she investigated over 100 prohibited practices complaints relating to cartel investigations, vertical restrictive practices and abuse of dominance.

Naasha began her career as a Candidate Attorney at Glyn Marais in 2009 and later joined AECI Limited as a Legal Advisor in 2011. In the same year, she joined the Competition Commission of South Africa in the Enforcement and Exemptions Division, where she investigated over 100 prohibited practices complaints relating to cartel investigations, vertical restrictive practices and abuse of dominance in various industries such as telecommunications, petroleum, healthcare, chemical and retail markets, amongst others. She was also a team member of the LPG market inquiry.

In 2014, she joined Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr’s Competition team as an associate. She was promoted to senior associate in 2017.  

Her experience encompasses the following:

  • Advising on all aspects of prohibited practices, including cartel investigations, vertical restrictive practices and abuse of dominance complaints. She recently assisted in advising on the first tying/bundling case that is currently before the Competition Tribunal.
  • Preparing and submitting merger notifications to the Competition Commission of South Africa as well as to other domestic and regional regulators in Sub-Saharan Africa. She recently assisted in preparing the merger notification in the platinum mining industry involving Lonmin Plc and Sibanye Gold t/a Sibanye-Stillwater and has acted for a number of private equity firms.
  • Assist in competition litigation including complaint referrals, contested merger hearings, interlocutory applications and consent agreements before the Competition Tribunal and the Competition Appeal Court.
  • Assisting clients to queries relating to the LPG market inquiry and retail grocery market inquiry conducted by the Competition Commission.
  • Reviewing and drafting compliance policies and guidelines for local and international trade associations in the petroleum industry and the chrome industry.
  • Drafting competition law opinions for clients in various sectors, such as advice on the structuring and notifiability of transactions, implications of commercial agreements and general competition advice.
