Mmatiki Aphiri is a Director in our Corporate and Commercial practice. She has gained strong experience in the Mining and Property sector specifically, advising on the MPRDA and BEE legislation; new applications for mineral rights; permits and permissions; conversion of rights under the MPRDA; transfers of mining and prospecting rights; all relevant mining and prospecting agreements; disposals of mining-related assets and operations and due diligence investigations.

Mmatiki began her career as a Candidate Attorney in 2006 at Mervyn Taback Inc. In 2007 she was admitted as an Attorney and Notary Public and appointed as an Associate. In June 2010, she was appointed as a Director of Mervyn Taback Inc. She was appointed as a Director at Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr in 2017.

  • Assisted AfriSam, Anglo American Coal, Rustenburg Platinum Mines, De Beers, Royal Bafokeng Platinum, Kuyasa Mining, Mbuyelo Group and Areva with notarial executions, amendments and transfers of various mineral rights in terms of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002, including registration of minerals rights in terms of the Mining Titles Registration Act 16 of 1967.
  • Involved in the registration of the consolidated mineral rights held by Rustenburg Platinum Mines, pursuant to the acquisition by Sibanye Gold of Rustenburg Platinum Mine's Rustenburg mining operations.
  • Assisted AfriSam, Mbuyelo Group and Impala Platinum, Hotazel Manganese Mines, Rustenburg Platinum Mines on a number of property related transactions including the registration of transfers.
  • Involved in Tsogo Sun’s acquisition by Hospitality Property Fund of certain hotel properties in Tsogo Sun’s property portfolio and attended to the registration of transfer of the hotel properties.
  • Involved in Tsogo Sun’s Sun 1 Hotel properties restructure and attended to the registration of transfers of the Sun 1 Hotel properties.
