Mmatiki Aphiri is a Director in our Corporate & Commercial practice. She has strong experience in the Mining and Property   sector specifically, advising on the MPRDA; new applications for mineral rights; permits and permissions; conversion of rights under the MPRDA; transfers of mining and prospecting rights; all relevant mining and prospecting agreements; disposals of mining-related assets and operations and due diligence investigations.

Mmatiki began her career as a legal recoveries' consultant for Telesure Group Services in 2004. In 2006 she joined Mervyn Taback Inc as a Candidate Attorney.  She was admitted as an Attorney and Notary Public in 2007 and was appointed as an Associate. In June 2010, she was appointed as a Director of Mervyn Taback Inc. She joined Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr in 2017 as a Director.

  • Attended to the executions and registrations of mineral rights relating to the following transactions –
    • The acquisition by Eastern Platinum of Rustenburg Platinum Mines Limited's 42.5% participation in the Pandora Joint Venture.  Pandora is a PGM mine in South Africa.
    • The acquisition of additional mineral resources from Rustenburg Platinum Mines Limited, by Northam Platinum, being the ZAR 1 billion acquisition of a portion of the Amandelbult Mine.
    • The acquisition of the Eland Mine from Glencore South Africa and its joint venture partner by Northam Platinum.
    • The sale by Anglo American Inyosi Coal of the New Largo thermal coal colliery to New Largo Coal, which is owned by Seriti Resources and Coalzar. Deal value - ZAR850 million.
    • The sale of Anglo American's Eskom - tied domestic thermal coal operations to Seriti Coal. Deal value - ZAR2.3 billion.
    • Sale of the Alexander Block by Anglo American Coal to Sasol Mining. Deal value – ZAR650 million.
  • Involved in the registration of the consolidated mineral rights held by Rustenburg Platinum Mines, pursuant to the acquisition by Sibanye Gold of Rustenburg Platinum Mine's Rustenburg mining operations.
  • Assisted AfriSam, Mbuyelo Coal, Impala Platinum, Hotazel Manganese Mines, Rustenburg Platinum Mines on a number of property related transactions including the registration of transfers.
  • Involved in Tsogo Sun’s acquisition by Hospitality Property Fund of certain hotel properties in Tsogo Sun’s property portfolio and attended to the registration of transfer of the hotel properties.
  • Involved in Tsogo Sun’s Sun 1 Hotel properties restructure and attended to the registration of transfers of the Sun 1 Hotel properties.
