After completing his law degree, Julian tutored commercial law at the University of Cape Town. He was awarded a fellowship to teach at the Pennsylvania State University where he was offered a Scholarship to complete a Masters degree in comparative law which he completed in 1999.

Julian began his career as a Candidate Attorney in 2001 at Adam Harris & Associates in Cape Town. He became an Associate in 2003 and in 2004, Julian joined Jan D de Villiers (now Werksmans) as an Associate. Julian was promoted to Director in 2006. Later that same year he joined Hofmeyr Herbstein & Gihwala (now Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr) as a Director.

  • Actively involved in the insolvency and business rescue industry acting for both creditors, liquidators, business rescue practitioners and major financial institutions.
  • Advising for Transnet regard to the setting aside of business rescue proceedings where the business rescue practitioner - leased key space at premises located at various harbours in South Africa.
  • Advised an International Investment Funder in regard to maximising their recovery on business rescue and instituting proceedings against the Business Rescue Practitioner.
  • Advised various mining houses in regard to business rescue and options available to the Boards.
  • Advised Stibium Mining SA in respect of their rights against the business rescue practitioner and thereafter liquidator in respect of services rendered whilst in liquidation.
  • Advised a mining house in respect of their contractual rights when a crucial entity in their mining operation was placed into business rescue.
  • Advised the shareholder of Evraz Highveld Steel in respect of its rights and obligations during business rescue.
  • Advised a Major Petroleum company in regard to a commercial recovery in a liquidation Instituted liquidation proceedings on behalf of a Petroleum an international energy and chemicals company against two other Petroleum companies in respect of a R270 million debt due to our client. The indebtedness arose as a result of fraudulently issued guarantees from a renowned financial institution. Instituted proceedings to set aside the business rescue of the company and place into liquidation..
  • Advised a Financial institution and Funding Agency, who collectively invested approximately R 90 million into a renewable energy wind farm project in Cape Town. We perfected our client's rights held under a General Notarial Bond and liquidate the company. Whilst in liquidation, a Scheme of Arrangement was formulated by ourselves (acting on behalf of the liquidators) wherein the company was sold to a third party and the creditors received almost four times more than what they would have received in an ordinary liquidation scenario. The liquidation order was set aside, and the company restored to solvency.
  • Advised a creditor in the submission and preparation of his claim against a mining company for services rendered prior to the commencement of business rescue proceedings.
  • Currently advising a mining house in respect of its legal entitlement to interdict a business rescue plan, where implementation would adversely affect their mining rights.
  • Regularly advises financial institutions in regard to the perfection of their security prior to business rescue, the setting aside of business rescue proceedings.
  • Represents financial institutions and other creditors on the adoption of business rescue plans.

  • Chambers Global 2018-2020 ranked Julian in Band 3: Restructuring/Insolvency.
  • The Legal 500 EMEA 2013–2019 recommended Julian Jones for dispute resolution.
