Craig Thomas is a Senior Associate in our Competition Law practice. Craig has experience in a wide range of proceedings before the competition authorities in South Africa and in numerous African jursidictions and has advised clients across a wide range of industries, including telecommunications, travel, private equity, fast-moving consumer goods and manufacturing.

Craig Thomas joined Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr as a Candidate Attorney in 2016 and was appointed as an Associate in 2018. Craig was appointed Senior Associate in 2021.

Craig is experienced in drafting merger filings for submission to the Competition Commission of South Africa, securing merger approval from competition authorities in South Africa and Africa, representing clients in prohibited practice and opposed merger hearings in the Competition Tribunal of South Africa, drafting merger notifiability opinions, training clients on competition compliance and conducting competition due diligence investigations. Craig has also been involved in representing clients in investigations by the Botswanan Competition Authority, merger filings in Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Swaziland (eSwatini) and COMESA.

Craig has recently been involved in the following notable transactions or matters:

  • Large merger between CIVH and Vumatel (2018 private equity deal of the year);
  • Large merger between ArcelorMittal South Africa and Highveld Structural Mills;
  • Large merger between Agile Capital and Averge Technologies;
  • Large merger between LDCA, Willowton, Noordfed and Progress Milling;
  • Intermediate mergers between DNI-4PL and 3G Mobile and Blue Label Mobile; and
  • Successfully defending Tourvest in complaint referral proceedings before the Competition Tribunal.
