A desire to achieve social justice

André de Lange, a Director in the Corporate and Commercial Practice, is the Cape Town coordinator for all the instructions to the firm from Ikamva Labantu.

Ikamva Labantu ('the Future of our Nation') is a South African non-profit, organisation. It can trace its roots back to the days of apartheid, when Helen Lieberman started working with women in the poverty-stricken townships around Cape Town. This led to a movement of social development that has grown into: an umbrella body with a network of over 1,000 projects working with and assisting various sectors of the population - children, youth, families, seniors and those physically challenged. These projects improve the daily lives of tens of thousands of the neediest people in South Africa.

Andre has been involved in a number of commercial instructions for Ikamva Labantu, more recently the restructuring of the corporate existence of Ikamva Labantu. He assisted them in the setting up of a new public benefit trust and its governance structure and the migration of their business and activities from their old voluntary association to the new trust. He has also served as the contact between Ikamva Labantu and Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr, directing a wide range of instructions from Ikamva Labantu to colleagues, including conveyancing instructions, employment matters and drafting and commenting on commercial contracts.

Says Andre, "I do believe that our true success in life would ultimately not be measured by our wealth or secular achievements, but amongst others in the manner in which our lives and work have benefited the lives of others, and made this world a better place. Often our decision to choose law as a career is prompted by a desire to achieve social justice. Once in the career, these lofty ideals often become blurred by day to day practice and being an attorney becomes just another job or way of earning a living. To partner with an organisation such as Ikamva, which makes a real impact on the lives of others, reminds me of what it is all about."
