Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr appoints Preeta Bhagattjee as National Head of the Technology, Media and Telecommunications practice group
Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr has announced the appointment of Preeta Bhagattjee to the role of National Practice Head for the firm's Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT) practice group, with immediate effect. Preeta succeeds Hans Evenhuis who is relocating to the firm's Cape Town office in April 2010.
Preeta joined Cliffe Dekker & Todd (now Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr) in 1997 and moved up the ranks to become a director in 2001.
In 2003, Preeta was appointed by the Communications Minister to the nine-member board of the .za Domain Name Authority and currently serves as the vice chairperson.
Preeta has more than a decade of experience in technology and communications law, with a key specialisation in outsourcing and service level agreements. She also advises on e-commerce law, intellectual property, and data protection and privacy issues.
She was a member of the legacy Cliffe Dekker Technology Law Unit, which was one of the first legal practices established in South Africa to offer dedicated technology and e-commerce law services.
A key strength of the TMT practice group is the team's knowledge built over more than 15 years of experience in the field. This experience has led to an in-depth understanding of the technical aspects and business effects of general technology and complex outsourcing services arrangements. It means that the team is able to advise clients not only on the legal aspects of each transaction, but also on the technical and business-related facets, and on how best these can be incorporated into the relevant agreements.
Preeta is highly ranked in her field in leading international professional publications including Chambers Global Guide to the World's Leading Lawyers for Business and the Practical Law Company's PLC Which lawyer handbooks.
Chambers Global 2009 has rated Preeta as one of the prominent lawyers in the South African IT and Telecoms legal sector, where she is described as being "an accessible and dedicated lawyer who makes you feel like you are her only client,".
PLC Which Lawyer? 2009 recommends Preeta in Outsourcing and IT. PLC notes that 'with a customer-driven client base, her outsourcing practice tends to focus on the technology sector and IT, facilities and logistics outsourcing transactions.'
Preeta has contributed a chapter on South African law to the publication "Cybercrime and Security", edited by Professor Pauline Reich and published by Oxford University Press.
Chris Ewing, Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr CEO, said: "I am delighted to welcome Preeta to her new role. We are seeing an increasing demand from our clients for advice across a range of TMT related issues. Preeta's considerable experience, leadership skills and great reputation will be key to both our own and our clients' long term success in the market".
