The International Law Office (ILO) has announced the winning partners and law firms for the ILO Client Choice Awards 2010. Three Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr partners have been named as the exclusive winners in their respective categories for South Africa. They are: Emil Brincker, Corporate Tax; Kathleen Rice, Telecommunications, and David Thompson, Mergers & Acquisitions.

Established in 2005, the ILO Client Choice Awards have traditionally recognised one firm per jurisdiction but the research was extended this year to recognise individual partners who excel across the full spectrum of client service. One winner was chosen per practice area per jurisdiction.

ILO recognised 201 individual winners across 46 jurisdictions. Notably, three Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr partners were chosen among only five individuals commended in South Africa, adding significant kudos to their selection.

The research process focused on the ability of partners and firms to add real value to their clients' business. The shortlist was generated from an independent ILO subscriber survey of corporate counsel, which recorded over 2,000 responses, as well as additional research and detailed interviews conducted by an inhouse ILO team. Partners were assessed on a range of criteria: quality of legal advice, value for money, commercial awareness, effective communication, billing transparency, tailored fee structures, response time, sharing of expertise and use of technology.

What clients said

Selected verbatim comments from clients surveyed include the following:

About Kathleen Rice -

Her knowledge of and passion for telecoms law is unrivalled.

I have been very impressed by Ms Rice's work and indicative of my belief and admiration of her work, her work ethic and selflessness.

Kathleen's ability, integrity, knowledge, tenacity and care towards her clients is impeccable.

e were deeply impressed by the research undertaken and the quality of drafting, and deliverables were timeously provided.

About Emil Brincker -

His knowledge is encyclopaedic both with regard to domestic tax law as well as to international and treaty law.

Despite Dr Brincker great expertise and knowledge he is open minded and willing to be convinced otherwise where his counterparty has good arguments to the contrary - a rare gift indeed amongst legal counsel.

He stands head and shoulders above anyone else in his field.

He is, in my view, the pre-eminent tax advisor in South Africa and quite simply is unrivalled in that position.

About David Thompson -

David displays a sound grasp of commercial realities, which seems to be a rare combination. In fact, I have never come across any lawyer with a similar skill set in this domain.

We regard him as a partner to the business. This is because he both understands our business and our interests well and is also able to apply his considerable experience and competence in a way that adds specific and material value.

With his knowledge, understanding and advice on the legal issues, he provided us with the comfort that he had the matter under control.

I do believe David is a very skilful, experienced and reliable lawyer.
