Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr's Tax practice has been singled out as one of South Africa and the world's finest tax firms, according to the latest rankings in World Tax 2010.
The Tax practice has moved up two tiers in the last year, to claim a Tier 2 ranking among the top 5 South African law firms with Tax practices. The leading firms were selected on international network and leading reputation in their own market; and capability in all the areas of tax: planning, transactional, transfer pricing, indirect taxes and litigation.
The important point to note about the rankings, according to the publisher, is that all firms listed have well regarded tax individuals in their advisory team.
Published by International Tax Review, World Tax is a comprehensive guide to the world's leading tax firms and tax advisers. Researchers and journalists interviewed a representative sample of corporate clients of the leading firms in the market to get opinions of tax advisers from their clients and their peers and compile the tiers of leading firms from 46 jurisdictions.
The commentators described Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr's tax practice as having grown substantially over the last 12 months with the addition of "renowned cross-border transaction expert", Emil Brincker along with Natalie Napier from Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs, and Justin Liebenberg from Grant Thornton.
National Head of the Tax Practice, Patrick McGurk is described by one commentator as "very accomplished in the financial services sector." He is known for his work in capital markets and financial products.
One client said: "I have used Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr on share schemes and they were very good".
In other recent accolades, Emil Brincker was named 'Tax Adviser of the Year 2009' by the South African Institute of Tax Practitioners for his outstanding contribution to the South African tax profession.
