The New Economy named Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr as Best Corporate Mergers & Acquisitions Practice, Africa when it announced the winners of its First Annual Awards, 2008 recently.
Established to recognise the very best companies, institutions and organisations in banking, law and business services around the globe, the Awards honour those who have achieved the highest levels of attainment in their respective fields.
Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr was first nominated onto the shortlist of SA law firms by readers of The New Economy, a global financial journal and part of World News Media. The winners were chosen by an Awards panel made up of contributors to the magazine and the editorial board. "With a formidable amount of experience in finance, economics, journalism and business, the panel applied its collective expertise to its decision," said The New Economy editor, Jan Speigel. "Discussions were conducted at length with our contributors from around the world."
All award winners were judged according to a number of criteria, including:
- Innovation and originality
- Keeping ahead of the competition
- Proof of development and continued progression
- Market leadership.

Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr topped the Mergermarket league table of South African Legal Advisers for 2008. The firm worked on 19 deals valued at US$11.5bn and as a result topped the M&A value tables.
This award underscores several other recent achievements, including being named Legal Adviser of the Year, 2008 in the ACQ Finance Country Awards for Achievement category and being named Best Large Law Firm in South Africa, 2009 on receiving the Diamond Arrow Award in recognition of its being ranked 1st overall in a national survey on the leading legal firms in South Africa.
In another recent award, National Head of the firm's Competition practice, Mondo Ntlha, was named Best Competition Lawyer, 2009 in the World Finance legal awards.
