Commercial services law firm, Cliffe Dekker has, for the second time this year, been voted by corporates as South Africa’s leading law firm. At an awards ceremony held in Johannesburg on Thursday, 14 October 2004 to honour Gauteng leaders and achievers, it was announced that Cliffe Dekker had achieved the highest overall rating in the law firm sector.
The firm was voted ‘outstanding’ by corporate users of legal services and by local and provincial government officials. The respondents in the independent survey conducted by Professional Management Review, PMR.Intelligence, were asked to nominate, then rate, law firms in Gauteng that have done the most to enhance economic growth and development in the province.
In addition to being ranked first overall, so rated by more than 50% of survey respondents, Cliffe Dekker also received the top honour, the PMR Diamond Arrow Award, which is given only to companies that achieve a rating of 4.00 or more out of a possible 5.00. Cliffe Dekker received a 4.38 rating.
This was Cliffe Dekker’s second PMR Diamond Arrow Award achievement in 2004. Corporates rated Cliffe Dekker as South Africa's best large law firm for 2004 in PMR's national survey of legal firms and in March, the firm won the prestigious PMR Diamond Arrow Award for achieving the highest overall rating, surpassing the ratings given to the leading large, medium and small size law firms.
The latest No. 1 ranking is the cherry on the top in a year of significant achievements for Cliffe Dekker in 2004.
Earlier in the year, Cliffe Dekker was ranked the No. 1 Legal Adviser by deal value in DealMakers' ranking of mergers & acquisitions (M&A) activity for 2003. Cliffe Dekker was also Legal Adviser to Harmony Gold in a range of transactions that resulted in the creation of ARM, South Africa's largest diversified empowered mineral resources company. The transactions were acknowledged as 'Deal of the Year' in both the DealMakers M&A awards for 2003 and the BusinessMap Foundation Empowerment Awards for 2004. Furthermore, the firm acted for Comparex in BusinessMap's 'runner-up Deal of the Year.'
Cliffe Dekker chairman, Chris Ewing says: "These accolades give external acknowledgment that we have made significant headway in our vision to be recognised as South Africa's premier commercial legal services firm."
Ewing believes the firm's success is due to the high standards the firm's professionals consistently adopt and apply, and an unyielding commitment to the best interests of its clients.
