Pro Bono and Human Rights
Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr is committed to respecting and promoting the rights entrenched in the Bill of Rights of the Constitution. As a corporate citizen, Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr is committed to facilitating access to justice for the disadvantaged and vulnerable, and providing legal services to NGOs or non-profit organisations.
These commitments form part of the offering of our dedicated Pro Bono and Human Rights department.
The department focuses on creating partnerships and nurturing relationships with NGO's, non-profit organisations, and other appropriate institutions on a pro bono basis, as well as undertaking substantive project work.
Our dedicated Pro Bono and Human Rights department was launched as a commitment to strengthening the firm's pro bono services. The department focuses on creating partnerships and nurturing relationships with NGO's, non-profit organisations, and other appropriate institutions on a pro bono basis, as well as undertaking substantive project work.
Every lawyer in the firm is called on to make a contribution, which offers them the opportunity individually to fulfil their social responsibility commitments.
Our young lawyers and candidate attorneys gain invaluable experience and perspective through exposure to a wide range of pro bono and human rights matters.
The firm's strong ties with DLA Piper, one of the world's largest legal practices, creates a platform for expanding the Pro Bono and Human Rights department's activities, building on the understanding of the role of South Africa regionally and in a developmental context.
In association with New Perimeter, DLA Piper's non-profit affiliate dedicated exclusively to international pro bono work, Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr is positioned to deliver a more strategic approach to pro bono initiatives in South Africa.
Launched in 2005, New Perimeter remains the only law firm non-profit entity focused on global pro bono work. As the first initiative of its kind in the legal industry, New Perimeter has been successful in addressing some of the most critical issues in parts of the world that urgently need assistance. Through New Perimeter, lawyers from DLA Piper's offices around the globe provide legal assistance on projects addressing issues including health care, hunger, economic development, law reform and human rights.
Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr will draw on New Perimeter's international experience and expertise to guide us in our commitment to providing meaningful pro bono services to the communities within which we operate.
In 2005, DLA Piper created New Perimeter to go beyond the firm's long tradition of domestic pro bono service and enable its lawyers to participate in pro bono projects of vital importance in the global community.
ProBono.Org facilitates the provision of free legal services for the poor by volunteer private lawyers. The first and only organisation of its kind in the country, our innovative model channels millions of rands of top quality legal assistance, pro bono, to the most vulnerable and marginalised people. ProBono.Org screens, matches and refers clients to volunteer private lawyers. Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr is a founding member of ProBono.org and represented on the board.
