We provide legal assistance in the establishment and support of
schools in poor communities. This covers structuring, governance, tax exemption
and fundraising, as well as assisting with ongoing legal issues as they arise.
A number of our lawyers serve on the boards of these schools. Henry Bennett
also continues as Chairman of the country's largest independent school
association, ISASA, with a special mandate to increase the numbers of
under-resourced black schools which can enjoy its benefits (the number of which
now exceeds 30% of the total ISASA membership).
The Tertiary School in Business Administration (TsiBA) is a
free-to-student tertiary level institution that offers an enriched Bachelor in
Business Administration (BBA) programme for applicants from impoverished
communities. The university is funded through corporate and individual cash
donations and in the form of kind and time. In 2007 our lawyers began giving
lectures on commercial law to first and second year students. The course covers
the relevant law topics needed for a student to enter the world of business
administration.
All our lawyers conduct lectures and tutorials three times a
week. Three TsiBA students participated in our student vacation programme in
July 2008. They worked in the Corporate and Commercial practice, Human
Resources and Marketing departments where they were exposed to the day-to-day
running of the business of a corporate law firm.
